Oamaru Victorian fete

What a wonderful day today in Oamaru  — sunshine, colourful bunting and flags, music and costumes galore.

My sister Phil helped me out on my DANDELIONZ stall and we had positive feedback on my sewing efforts. Sales of pinafores, summer tops, handmade bias binding etc made for a good day.  I can definitely recommend the Fete, and can commend the organisers.

First Market done…onwards

I had my first Market stall yesterday and despite the chilly weather and small size of the Market, I actually sold some wares! It was an excellent practice run for the two large maket days that I plan to do over the next few months. I plan to be at both:

- The Oamaru Victorian fete on November 22nd

and

- Dunedin Thieves Ally Market day on Feb 13th, 2010.

Some pictures from my first Market day.

Smiling

I have been very busy sewing for the last couple months. But it finally starting to come together and I have my first Market day this Sunday.

Here is a sneak preview, plenty of smiling faces, pretty fabric and some sewn details.

On another topic, I enjoyed two hours of crafty fun the other night when I attended the first of my woodcut printing course ! I had a ball chipping away at the MDF sheet with sharp cutting instruments. Whilst others worked on their first sketches, some made their first cuts into their wood – I went manic and completely finished my first woodcut.!!

This fast paced ability comes purely from being a mum with young children and having so little craft time. When you get the time to create, you have to do at  three times normal pace,  in order to achieve anything.

Sunday marks the launch of DANDELIONZ Clothing, whilst I have been in the fabric business for five years now, this is my first foray into kids clothing – wish me luck.

Rather than excuses….

……as to why I haven’t posted for ages and a day, I’ll simply make a new start. Spring 09 is just around the corner and it’s as good time as any to start sewing summer clothes and start my blog over again.

I have been preparing fabrics! My trusty old iron has been working overtime (especially considering it has no steam function!)

Posting some pictures of my latest sewing experiments soon…..

And the preparation begins…

September has seen the arrival of warm spring weather and lovely fabric arrivals. Able to enjoy prewashing these gorgeous cottons and let them dry beautifully in the breeze. See if you can pick the designers of the prints!!

Winter burst

Winter Clematis

Winter Clematis

Learning to post pictures on here, so I thought I would start with a burst of freshness in winter. This is one plant in my garden that loves winter and is just waiting to burst into flower. I shall take inspiration from it!

Leaving the fabric nest…

As you can see I am struggling to find time to write in my blog, or maybe it’s a shortage of INSPIRATION. The winter weather here has gripped me for the last couple weeks and hibernation mode has kicked in. Being indoors most of the time however has enabled me to start sorting my fabric stash. Now usually when sorting  one feels a sense of release when bags of unwanted items leave the house, yay less clutter. But fabric sorting is different, you go through a process of talking to yourself: ‘do I need this piece; what am I going to make out of this piece?; am I REALLY ever going to sew that thing, but should I keep it anyway?‘ … the mental conflict is terrible. But eventually, some pieces are selected to leave the safety of the Fabric Stash and find new homes with other fabric stashes.

Maybe some fabric is destined never to be cut and sewn up, I sometimes wonder this when I come across lovely vintage pieces – untouched since they were purchased and stashed away until the owner, like me had a clear out (or died! but we won’t dwell on that scenario). Fabric just to be owned and provide fabric love and admiration. But no! I am determined,  today I WILL cut some pretty fabric and get out of my winter hibernation mood.

Early Bird

As a little child I wished I was a bird so I could fly home from school instead of walking. I’ve certainly become a bit of a bird as my most productive time is the early morning when just me and the birds are aware and working. Although whilst in the grips of winter it IS pitch dark outside!

I’d be happy to still be asleep but my little one (daughter 7 months) is waking so I’m getting into a routine of checking and replying to email messages early in the morning. I’m enjoy starting the day productively, and feeling like I am organised.

Thank you to a couple ‘fabric’ friends for their posts on here, I promise to start adding some pics of fabric very soon. Fabric is definitely needed!

Starting from scratch

I’ve finally succumbed to the blog. Until now I have claimed that I barely have time to breathe (already gave up on sleep and my own personal space when my third child was born) and would never have time to write a blog.

But the time feels right to start now. I have a Learner plate stuck firmly to my forehead as I find my way around this new world of text and image. And no! I’m not going to ask anyone for help! As usual I must stubbornly, (but elegantly) do things MY way.

Something about me? uumm When I was young, I felt older – in a wise way, not an early maturing way! Now I am in my thirties and I feel younger than my age and ‘marital’ status of 14 years indicates. A teacher once wrote in my report that I was self possessed, at first I regarded it as a compliment, years later I questioned it, now I feel it was a very accurate observation. I’m not possessed by the devil, nor put myself above others, but I AM self sufficient, self motivating, and always trying to quietly achieve.  I always play to win!  and a loss makes me determined to try harder.

I have three gorgeous children in a little house looking out to sea. Very poetic? very windy actually, the house and the children, especially the baby right now. I love fabric, I would love more time to create with fabric but just having fabric around me makes me happy.
